Q & A - BUST

Bath University Student Theatre (BUST) return to the Fringe this year. They perform Pinter's The Lover (12th-15th July) and Sartre's No Exit (same dates but different times obviously!) Clearly they are no lightweights. They do know how to have a good time though - so watch out for them around town and buy them a drink. Three's Company ought to be buying BUST drinks all week I think!

You have played at the Buxton Fringe before why are you coming back?
BUST came last year with Kafka's "The Trial". That was our first year of touring so we only brought one play so we could get the lay of the land and work out what festivals were all about. We had a great time and saw some brilliant theatre, so we're back with two plays to hopefully build up a bit more of a name for ourselves, and also give ourselves a bit of a practice before heading up to Edinburgh.

Amongst Buxton’s famous sons and (adopted daughter) are Tim Brooke-Taylor, Dave Lee Travis and Vera Brittain. How do you feel about following in the footsteps of such giants?
It's great performing in an atmosphere where almost everyone is amateur or waiting for their big break, and you never know if people you see (or, of course, ourselves) will turn out to be huge.

What reaction do you expect from your audiences?
Hopefully good ones! We're bringing a few 'groupies' from our society so they're bound to enjoy it.

5 pieces of fruit and veg a day – what do you choose to eat?
Whatever the designated company member is cooking...we have a day each in the kitchen to provide for everybody else.

Do you have any superstitions or routines that you follow before starting a performance?
We always do a warmup which has a fair few odd tongue-twisters and games in it.

Buxton Mineral Water – how do you drink it?
Straight up, with a twist.

Are there any other performers/artists that you especially admire? If so, who and why?
I saw Three's Company last year in "Play on Words" and loved it - the script was really fresh and funny and the cast were very energetic. I also love the dedication of the three founding members, who started the company in their teens and have carried it through to being a very successful fringe venue manager. Hats off!

What question would you have liked to answer here?
Is the weather going to be as bad this year as last?

What is your answer?
I desperately hope not. [ed. - No, the weather's worse than last year!]
