Nice one Martin, nice one son

The Opera House is one of the most obvious landmarks in Buxton. It was designed by Frank Matcham the distinguished theatre architect, and opened in 1903. Happy then the publican of The Old Clubhouse situated 10 yards across the way on Water Street. Pre-, post- and intermission theatre drinkers flock to the The Clubhouse (if you've tried getting a drink at the tiny Opera House bars you'd know why some pop across the road. Not a criticism of the Opera House staff - I assume the Edwardians had intervals that exceeded the 20 minute 21st century norm).

Anyway, happy also those performing at The Clubhouseduring the Festival Fringe - a key venue if you want to be noticed. Joy overfloweth in the knowledge that the venue is skillfully and energetically managed by Martin Beard - actor, director, writer, producer and nurturer of local theatrical skills. Martin has been a key part of the Fringe for years and has been instrumental in setting the high standard for drama in and around Buxton - and not just during the Fringe.

During the Festival Fringe The Old Clubhouse is Venue 21 - further renamed Nice Venues and Martin is Mr Nice himself. Martin, a quiet, unassuming sort of chap smiles, modest and just slightly embarrassed at the football-terrace chant 'Nice one, Martin'.

For 2007 at least 13 events are being held at Nice Venues - musicals, comedy, drama, poetry. Check out the websitewww.nicevenues.co.uk for details of the shows and ticket booking arrangements.
